Grams of sugar per 100 ml of the drink as sold, straight off the packaging. Instant mixes and cordials are per 100 g or 100 ml of the powder or syrup, before you add water, so their numbers are not comparable with a ready to drink bottle.

The drinks nobody can give you a number for

The same study measured 63 more drinks in these categories. It could record their acidity, but not their sugar, because none of them come with a label to read. If you have ever searched for the sugar in a teh tarik and found five different answers, this is why.

    Hawker drinks

10 measured · asam boi, orange, sea coconut, watermelon, coconut, Thai tea, green tea, corn

    Milk tea and bubble tea

10 measured · Chatime, Tealive, Koi, Gong Cha, Tiger Sugar, Daboba, Coolblog

    Fresh fruit juices

11 measured · kiwi, strawberry, apple, orange, guava, watermelon, papaya

    Designer coffee

10 measured · Starbucks, Costa, Tealive, McDonald, Dunkin, Secret Recipe lattes

    Brewed tea

12 measured · Boh, Dilmah, Lipton, Ahmad Tea, Cameron Valley

    Vegetable juices

10 measured · aloe vera, beetroot, cucumber, celery, carrot, kale, spinach

    Questions

How many grams of sugar are in a teaspoon?
About 4 grams. It is the conversion these calculators conventionally use, so 20 g of sugar is 5 teaspoons. Some sources round a teaspoon to 5 g, which is why you will see different teaspoon counts quoted for the same drink.
How much sugar a day is too much?
The Malaysian Dietary Guidelines and the WHO both put the limit at a tenth of your daily energy, which is about 50 g of added sugar for an average adult. The WHO adds that cutting to under 5 percent of energy, about 25 g, would bring further benefit. This tool shows your drink against both.
Why is there no figure for teh tarik from a stall?
Because there is no packaging to read. The study behind this tool recorded sugar from each product’s label, and a stall drink has none. It measured the acidity of hawker drinks, bubble tea, fresh juices and barista coffee, but could not record a sugar figure for any of them. That is the honest answer, and it is also the point: a drink made by hand in front of you is the hardest one to judge.
Is sugar per 100 ml the same as the sugar in the bottle?
No, and this is where most people underestimate. A panel that reads 10 g per 100 ml describes a tenth of a litre. A 500 ml bottle of that drink holds 50 g, which is five times the number on the label and a whole day of added sugar on its own. Use the amount field to get the real figure.
Why are instant mixes such big numbers?
Because they are measured per 100 g of powder, not of the drink you end up with. A sachet is usually 20 to 30 g, so a mix listing 70 g per 100 g carries roughly 14 to 21 g of sugar in one sachet. Enter the weight of your sachet rather than 100.
    Where these numbers come from
The authors bought 167 beverages from a local convenience store, measured the acidity of each, and recorded the sugar content from the packaging. Every figure in the table and the calculator is transcribed from that paper. Nothing has been estimated, averaged or filled in.

Teaspoons are calculated at 4 g of sugar per level teaspoon. Daily reference levels: 50 g a day, malaysian dietary guidelines and who, 10% of energy; 25 g a day, who further reduction, 5% of energy. Product formulations change, so check the pack in your hand before you rely on a figure here. This page is general information, not dietary advice for your own situation.
